Database support

We provide help and support in a variety of different ways. Here are three recent examples:

  • An industrial maintenance company commissioned a bespoke FoxPro database in the early 1990's. They have lost touch with the original developers but they needed to have the database modified to match the changes in their business.
  • A market research company used an Access database to record and analyse their findings and needed to be able to export their results in a new format. The staff member who had written the database left some years ago and nobody on site now knew how to create this new report.
  • A local company used a small Access database to hold details of their subcontractors. This database was developed by a young technician for his own use but is now the basis of their contract records. Over the years the technician gained promotion and is now the Quality Director. He is busy with board-level work and cannot really spare the time to work on his old database.

We solved the three problems above in three different ways:

  • We looked at the code for the FoxPro database, made the minor alterations and tested them here, then installed the new system back at the clients. This left the company with an improved database and with the knowledge that they could always call us back if they needed any further work.
  • We spent a day training a couple of the staff members in the basics of Access, talking them through the export process and explaining some other common housekeeping jobs that would help to keep the database running smoothly. This extra knowledge has made the staff more confident in their use of the database.
  • We spent a couple of days familiarising ourself with the QA database and documenting it, running a version of it here on some sample data. Staff can now phone us whenever they need advice and we can talk them through whatever has to be done. If they don't feel confident to make the changes themselves then we can do the necessary work for them - either by dialling in or by mnaking a site visit.
